Ne-Yo: In My Own Words

CD Album
Chocolate rating: 4/5 - Addictive

Having written hits for R&B contemporaries like Beyonce, R. Kelly, Mary J. Blige, and Mario (he wrote Mario's chart-topper Let Me Love You), it was obvious Ne-Yo was a talented songwriter, but with his debut album In My Own Words, this Arkansas-native proves he's so much more.

His catchy single Stay and Top 10 Billboard hit So Sick speak for themselves. No matter how many times you hear them on the radio, you can't not sing along.

Recalling past loves and unresolved feelings, Ne-Yo's songs resonate deeply with his audience. Not afraid to take risks, he bears his heart with sentimental lyrics and memorable melodies. When You're Mad playfully makes fun of his girlfriend when she's upset, while Let Go (another favorite) deals with the realization that he's still in love with his ex.

Other songs like: Sexy Love (with its enchanting declarations) almost sounds like he's channelling Michael Jackson (a cited musical influence along with Stevie Wonder, Prince and Marvin Gaye), and his It Just Ain't Right reminds you of a young Usher or Tevin Campbell.

At the same time, be assured that this album is not a bunch of sappy love songs. Get Down Like That sets the record straight revealing Ne-Yo as a changed man whose playa' days are over. Sultry In the Mirror seduces its listeners with a sensual guitar accompaniment and smooth vocals that openly reveal "You know I'm a freak", and Sign Me Up, driven by a badass set of horns and pulsating beats, is a sure-to-be club favorite.

Ne-Yo confirms his talent as both as a vocalist and entertainer with his last and standout track, Time. With piano, strings, and drums backing up his emotional vocals, the song draws you in and keeps you hooked. Ne-Yo uses this track to remind listeners to appreciate what they have while they have it.

Engaging and soulful, Ne-Yo is an original artist who knows the formula for making hits. His fusion of traditional R&B with contemporary harmonies is irresistible.
